Italian Beef Sandwiches

Italian Beef Sandwiches are such a crowd pleaser! Super tender shredded beef, peppers and onions are mixed together with beef broth and Italian dressing mix. This can also easily be made in the Slow Cooker or Instant Pot! I’m sharing instructions on how to do both below.

I am envious of people who can fly by the seat of their pants, are always buying new products to try and ordering different menu items whenever they dine out.

That is not me.

Now, occasionally, I break free from my day to day habits and guess what?  I usually am super happy with the results.  That is so true when I try new recipes and get out of that comfy zone where I am most comfortable.

Italian Beef Sandwiches are such a super crowd pleaser!

It is exactly what happened with these Italian Beef Sandwiches.

I was first introduced to them years ago when we had dinner at a childhood friend of my husband.  She cooked the beef to perfection and I would have never thought back then to toast the bread.  Doing that helps it not get too soggy when you add the juicy meat and cheese.

I begged her for the recipe.

Well, not begged, but politely hounded her for it over the next few weeks!

I’ve made these for church parties and family reunions and it’s always well received .  It was easy for me to prepare because all of it can be made in advanced…even toasting the bread!

Is Italian Beef Spicy?

Many have asked if the recipe is spicy.

It’s not spicy at all.

Just full of flavor!  If you want it to be spicy you could certainly add in hotter peppers to your liking.  Or simply have a few spicy peppers on the side if you have guests that like to light their food on fire.

For years I used my Slow Cooker and still love that method!  You can certainly make this in the Instant Pot depending on your time frame and schedule.

This is the Slow Cooker I use and love it!  Nothing super fancy, but it works great!

Italian Beef Sandwiches

Super tender shredded beef full of peppers, onions and garlic. Served on slightly toasted hoagie buns and topped with Provolone cheese!

Ingredients

  • 5-6 lbs Chuck Roast
  • 1 TBSP Olive Oil
  • 1 TBSP Butter
  • 1 Packet Italian Dressing Seasoning Mix
  • 16 oz Jar Sliced Pepperocini Peppers
  • 1/2 Medium Yellow Onion Thinly Sliced
  • 14 oz Beef Stock
  • 8-10 Hoagie Buns
  • 24 slices Provolone Cheese About 3 Slices Per Serving

Instructions

INSTANT POT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Set the saute mode on your Instant Pot and add in oil and butter.
  • Once hot, brown roast on one side for 5-6 minutes then turn over and brown the other side for another 5-6 minutes.
  • Add in onions, half of the jar of pepperocini peppers, ¼ cup pepperocini brine, Italian seasoning mix and beef stock.
  • Cover with lid and set the seal mode to closed.
  • Press Manual Mode and set time to 55 minutes.
  • Give the lid a Quick Release and remove lid.
  • Shred roast with 2 forks and add in the remaining pepperoncini peppers that have been drained.
  • Spread a little softened butter on each side of the hoagie slices and toast in the oven or on the stove top.
  • Immediately lay cheese slices over one side of the toasted bread and place a good portion of beef over the other side.
  • Top with cheese layered bread and serve.

SLOW COOKER INSTRUCTIONS

  • *Omit olive oil and butter from above ingredients.
  • Place roast in a large slow cooker.
  • Add in onions and half the jar of peppers.
  • Sprinkle dressing over the top.
  • Pour in 1/4 cup pepperocini brine and beef stock and place lid on top.
  • Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 6 hours.
  • Shred beef with two forks and add in remaining peppers (drained) and stir to combine.
  • Spread a little softened butter on each side of the hoagie slices and toast in the oven or on the stove top.
  • Immediately lay cheese slices over one side of the toasted bread and place a good portion of beef over the other side.
  • Top with cheese layered bread and serve.
